Sheikh Hasina ordered the use of lethal weapons: Former IGP Mamun in his statement

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has given a statement as a public witness in an ongoing case at the International Crimes Tribunal-1. In his statement, he claimed that on July 18 last year, the police started using ‘lethal weapons’ or lethal weapons on the direct orders of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through a phone call from the then Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan.

While giving his statement to the tribunal headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder on Tuesday, Chowdhury Mamun said, ‘On July 18 last year, the then Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan called me and said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had directly ordered the use of lethal weapons.’

The former IGP said that at that time he was at the police headquarters and Additional DIG Prolay Kumar Joarder was present with him. He said, ‘I told him about the Prime Minister’s instructions. He came out of my room and conveyed this instruction to the DMP Commissioner and the whole country. From that day, the use of lethal weapons began as per the Prime Minister’s instructions.’
In this statement, Chowdhury Mamun further claimed that several political leaders including Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Anisul Haque, Fazle Noor Taposh, Salman F Rahman, Obaidul Quader, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Mirza Azam, Hasanul Haque Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, and others had incited the Prime Minister to use lethal weapons.

It is worth noting that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have also been made accused in this case. As of Monday, 35 witnesses in the case have given their statements.
